Meet Genevieve Vaughan, founder and sponsor of FIRE - Feminist International
Radio Endeavour. She shared her vision regarding the creation of FIRE in
an interview last December 12, 1998 in Costa Rica when she came to take
part in FIRE´s Board Meeting as its first Honorary Board Memeber.
Genevieve shares with FIRE the process, between 1980-1991, that inspired
her to envision and create Feminist International Radio Endeavor (FIRE).
Funny enough, Vatican Radio inspired the creation of the Feminist Radio
she founded and has sponsored on an ongoing basis since 1991.

The moment of actual creation of FIRE came about in 1991 when the USA
war in the Persian Gulf began. For Genevieve, founding FIRE was one of
the responses to what women needed to do against war: to ensure that women´s
voices from the Global South be heard in the USA and worldwide. The reasons
for the name she chose are the following: FIRE is a never ending spark,
no matter how much of it is shared; and it is also a gift: the gift of
communication.

Genevieve shares her assessment about the role that FIRE has played
throughout its first 8 years in international communications, and also
talks about her perspective as she looks toward the next millenium.

Also discussed with FIRE is Genevieve's recent book For Giving,
about her philosophy of the gift-giving economy. Genevieve believes that
a paradigm shift from exchange to gift giving is necessary, and that women
learn and live this philosophy in their socialization and experience. Thus,
she claims that women are the ones who are called to change the world for
the sake of the planet and all of humanity.
