Cuadro de texto: When the spectrum of communications is analyzed, there is little doubt about the power that they encompass. Thus those who control mass media define for their audience what is socially relevant, and in turn erase or ignore certain topics or perspectives in their communications with large sectors of the population.

Within this framework, it is essential to use new technological means to create interactive spaces and communication that favors closing the gap between the “included and excluded” in many societies.

VISION REGARDING COMUNICATIONS

From a feminist, Latin American and Global South identity, FIRE produces its international communications work by combining the creative use of the new technologies with traditional media. In addition, one of the fundamental characteristics of FIRE is that it produces media from the perspectives of women, through their oral expression.

FIRE’s vision is not a proposal “for” women, it is a proposal “by” women for the world. It is not about the rights of women, although they are included, but focuses on the perspectives of women about all issues worldwide.

Thus, FIRE works to disseminate new forms of communication, contributing to shift the international flow of information, providing to a global audience access to women’s perspectives by using traditional and new technologies to develop a new concept of radio.

Our communications strategy combines conventional radio and Internet, thus extending our reach not only to Internet users, but through the process of multiplication reaches distributes FIRE’s content to radio, magazines, newspapers, electronic networks, web pages, etc. .

The Internet offers the potential of turning the computer into a high frequency transmitter at a more economical cost (than owning a traditional radio frequency) and is more accessible than traditional radio when it combines all forms of communication.

During development of FIRE’s web radio, or as feminists throughout the region call it, “the visual radio of women in cyberspace,” FIRE has realized that as with local radio or shortwave, we are transcending the temporary nature of the medium.
