Disability Rights Promotion International (DRPI) (new website)
Disability Rights Promotion International (DRPI) launches its new website:
www.yorku.ca/drpi (Link will open in new window.)
DRPI is a collaborative project to build capacity to monitor the human rights
situation of people with disabilities worldwide. The web site explains the
history of the project and its current status, provides an introduction to a
human rights approach to disability, and includes a brief overview of the United
Nations human rights system. The final report on DRPI's Phase I research is also
available on the site. DRPI aims to build on increasing international
recognition of disability as a human rights issue. The project will work
collaboratively with disability rights organizations and human rights advocates
to facilitate the collection of disability rights data and to encourage
participation in the activities of the international and regional human rights
mechanisms. DRPI is directed by Dr. Marcia Rioux of York University, Toronto and
Dr. Bengt Lindqvist, UN Special Rapporteur on Disability 1994-2002.
The project has three central focus areas for monitoring: an individual
violations focus: fact-finding with respect to alleged
human rights abuses; a systems focus--analyzing legislative frameworks, case
law, and government policies and programmes; a media focus-- tracking disability
imagery and coverage

Whirlwind Women: A Women's Wheelchair Building Project of Whirlwind Wheelchair International at San Francisco State University
Whirlwind Women involves women with disabilities in designing and
manufacturing wheelchairs in countries where wheeled mobility is scarce.
Founded in 1994, Whirlwind Women's first activity introduced women with
disabilities to wheelchair building at the NGO Forum of the UN Fourth
World Conference on Women in Beijing. We have since supported women with
disabilities interested in Whirlwind wheelchair production in Uganda,
Kenya, and Mexico. Independent women-run Whirlwind production shops are
now a reality in Kampala and Nairobi, and a group of women with
disabilities has embarked upon the second stage of intensive preproduction
training in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Click to go to Whirlwind Women website
Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA)
Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA) is the peak organisation for women with all types of disabilities in Australia. It is a federating body of individuals and networks in each State and Territory of Australia and is made up of women with disabilities and associated organisations. The national secretariat is located in Tasmania. WWDA is run by women with disabilities, for women with disabilities. It is the only organisation of its kind in Australia and one of only a very small number internationally. WWDA is inclusive and does not discriminate against any disability. WWDA seeks to ensure opportunities in all walks of life for all women with disabilities. In this it aims to increase awareness of, and address issues faced by, women with disabilities in the community. WWDA seeks to ensure the advancement of education of society to the status and needs of women with disabilities in order to promote equity, reduce suffering, poverty, discrimination and exploitation of women with disabilities. WWDA is unique, in that it operates as a national disability organisation; a national women's organisation; and a national human rights organisation.
